Towards Schenkerian Analysis by Computer: a reductional Matrix
نویسنده
چکیده
An approach to the implementation of Schenkerian analysis in a computer program is described. It would appear that a single piece of music has a number of possible analyses related exponentially to the size of the piece. The approach described differs from previous attempts at the computer implementation of Schenkerian analysis by not aiming to build an analysis directly from the notes of the score, but instead to construct a matrix which contains, in different paths through the matrix, all possible analyses. The size of the matrix is related to the square of the size of the piece, and the time-complexity of its generation to the cube. Generation of the matrix is therefore a tractable problem. An analysis can be derived from the matrix in time related to the square of the size of the piece, but the complexity of deriving analyses with particular properties has yet to be investigated.

Schenkerian Analysis by Computer: A Proof of Concept
A system for automatically deriving a Schenkerian reduction of an extract of tonal music is described. Schenkerian theory is formalised in a quasi-grammatical manner, expressing a reduction as a binary-tree structure. Computer software which operates in the manner of a chart parser using this grammar has been implemented, capable of deriving a matrix of reduction possibilities, in polynomial ti...
متن کاملA Data Set for Computational Studies of Schenkerian Analysis
Schenkerian analysis, a kind of hierarchical music analysis, is widely used by music theorists. Though it is part of the standard repertoire of analytical techniques, computational studies of Schenkerian analysis have been hindered by the lack of available data sets containing both musical compositions and ground-truth analyses of those compositions. Without such data sets, it is difficult to e...
متن کاملProbabilistic Modeling of Hierarchical Music Analysis
Hierarchical music analysis, as exemplified by Schenkerian analysis, describes the structure of a musical composition by a hierarchy among its notes. Each analysis defines a set of prolongations, where musical objects persist in time even though others are present. We present a formal model for representing hierarchical music analysis, probabilistic interpretations of that model, and an efficie...
متن کاملUsing Harmonic and Melodic Analyses to Automate the Initial Stages of Schenkerian Analysis
Structural music analysis is used to reveal the inner workings of a musical composition by recursively applying reductions to the music, resulting in a series of successively more abstract views of the composition. Schenkerian analysis is the most well-developed type of structural analysis, and while there is a wide body of research on the theory, there is no well-defined algorithm to perform s...
متن کاملRecognition of Variations Using Automatic Schenkerian Reduction
Experiments on techniques to automatically recognise whether or not an extract of music is a variation of a given theme are reported, using a test corpus derived from ten of Mozart‘s sets of variations for piano. Methods which examine the notes of the ̳surface‘ are compared with methods which make use of an automatically derived quasi-Schenkerian reduction of the theme and the extract in questi...
